Achilles

When Achilles was born, his mother, Thetis, dipped him into the River Styx in an attempt to make him immortal. This was a largely effective plan, as it rendered her child a near-unstoppable killing machine. However, she never let go of his heel, and so it did not receive the immortal blessing the river bestowed on the rest of his body. His heel remained his one weak point.

As was the case for many children in the ancient Greek world, Achilles’ father, Peleus, wanted nothing to do with the boy’s upbringing or education. Therefore Achilles received the tremendous honour of being taught by Chiron, the Centaur. Achilles was a decent enough guy, I guess, albeit a bit of a whiner. Sure, he was the best warrior the Greeks had at the time of the Trojan War, but his ego and sense of entitlement were by far his grandest features.  All Achilles does for 90% of the Iliad is pout about his treasure and chicks being taken away by Menelaus and Agamemnon, and the remainder of the story features him weeping over his lost buddy/lover, Patroclus. You got some Paris in my Achilles.

I greatly dislike this post because it’s not accurate and is taken completely out of context of greek culture. Also Thetis didn’t actually dip Achilles into the river Styx as a part of  the Iliad, that was added in later.

Also Patroclus’s death was Achilles’s fault. So… he was right to mourn. Also he’s the only person in the Iliad who is all “DUDE. why are we HERE. this SUCKS” which is 100% true.
